U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced this week $12.6 million in grants to Utah. Among grants were $1.74 million for four miles of safety shoulders for bicyclists in Little Cottonwood Canyon and installation of avalanche-control systems there, along with $500,000 for three miles of safety shoulders for bicyclists in neighboring Big Cottonwood Canyon. Also, $1.63 million was awarded for the Provo Intermodal Center; $3.75 million for rehabilitation of Interstate 80 from Wanship to Coalville; $1 million for improvements to an Interstate 84 bridge over the Echo Frontage Road; and $963,673 to help build a rest area at Lion’s Park Scenic Byway near Moab.
Other projects receiving money include $480,000 for safety upgrades and parking facilities along Scenic Byway 12 in Garfield and Wayne counties; $465,540 for construction of Midblock Road in Holladay between Laney Avenue and the Murray-Holladay Road; and $150,000 to replace an obsolete bridge on State Road 39 over Beaver Creek east of Huntsville.
